Straight From The Barrel is Blanton's at full strength — the same single barrels that make the world's most famous single-barrel bourbon, bottled uncut and unfiltered at whatever proof the cask gives, typically in the 125 to 135 range. For years it was an export-only bottling, sold in Europe and Japan while American drinkers hunted it in duty-free; in 2020 Sazerac finally brought it home as a limited annual US release, and it remains one of the hardest Blanton's to find. It comes from Buffalo Trace's Warehouse H, the metal-clad rickhouse Colonel Albert Blanton built in 1935 with its own heating system, where the distillery's high-rye Mash Bill #2 — shared with Elmer T. Lee and Hancock's — ages faster and warmer than in the brick warehouses. Each barrel is selected at peak maturity by the master distiller and hand-bottled one at a time, with the barrel number, rick, and dump date on the label, in the signature grenade-shaped decanter with the racehorse stopper. Expect everything the 93-proof Blanton's promises, concentrated: caramel, butterscotch, and vanilla on the nose with charred corn, leather, and a burst of rye spice, opening into a dense, oily palate of toffee, dark cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and oak, finishing very long with heat that opens beautifully to a splash of water.
